Mori Challenge: Day 2

Today’s question: Who are my mori idols? Who inspires my fashion?

I don’t have any style icons, mori or otherwise. I know R.E.M. was the reason I started wearing chunky men’s watches. I watched a video where the lead singer wore a candy striped shirt and a large, loose fitting watch and I really loved the look. Never found that exact shirt but I still wear large men’s watches.

That’s as close as I’ve ever gotten to having a fashion idol. My inspiration is usually either very practical or very indirect. Sometimes it’s a simple as “I need a shirt, this shirt looks fine.” The rest of the time it’s more “this dress feels like summer” or “these shoes remind me of a song” or “this necklace makes me feel like a Victorian psychic.” When I look at fashion my thoughts are the same. Part of me is assessing the outfit for comfort and practicality and part of me is comparing it to a book I once read or the way fall smells.

When I think about it like that, it seems obvious that lifestyle comes first for me and my style grows out of that. No wonder I didn’t do much with mori until the lifestyle really grabbed me.

How about an outfit that looks like Marie Laveau’s grave? I’m about as bad at fashion as I am at photography.

  1. What is ‘Mori’? I agree with you, practicality comes first.
It was Top of the Pops (a weekly show of performances by artist in the UK pop charts) in the late 80’s which inspired a lot of my style. People wearing really baggy trousers, bomber jackets or silk shirts, combined with fitted cycling shorts, shirts or vests.
