Goth Gratitude Day 5

We do not have coronavirus. I should say that up front. But we ran out of cough drops last night. Youngest kid and I both have seasonal pollen allergies, so this time of year my allergy medicine is never quite enough and my dear child coughs at night.

Since she’s only eleven, she didn’t think to mention our cough drop shortage until she needed one at bedtime. Stores have been closing early because of the virus so instead of going out last night I got myself to the store when it opened this morning.

As I walked in, an older gentleman was walking out with a large pack of toilet paper. Yes!!!!!! I’ve been looking for toilet paper for two straight weeks! I went right to the paper aisle and snagged a pack of Charmin and even better, a 4-pack of my favorite facial tissue. I can now sniffle my way through the spring flowers in comfort. They were large packs so I only took one of each. I don’t want to become one of those awful paper hoarders.

Of course, I got cough drops, too. And lettuce for the guinea pigs while I was there. I’m ridiculously happy right now and grateful both for paper goods and for my kid’s allergies.

  1. Good for you. We haven’t seen tp in shops in a long while, although there was a ton of paper towels and some tissues yesterday which we didn’t bother with–we have a fortunate amount of toilet paper prudently bought in the last sale a few months back. Our local co-op type store has monthly sales, and buying a few extra somethings each time we went in really pays off. I have vast hoards of chocolate in the freezer that did not inconvenience anyone when I bought a few extra here and there every time I went in. I hope your and your daughter’s snifflies go away soon. For me, drinking enough water–like 12 cups of eight ounces per day–makes the difference between starting a cold that day, and having it go away that night. The hydration just makes or breaks it for me.

    1. Oh yes, buying ahead a bit is a smart thing to do. It’s only when people panic and buy 10 times their usual amount that it’s a problem. My area is kind of famous for both large families and hoarding for the apocalypse so people got a bit crazy. I’m sure if things got really desperate one of our Mormon neighbors would share their end-times TP with us, though.

      1. But would it be used or unused?

      2. Good question. πŸ˜‰ I know one family that wouldn’t even give us used, but some of our neighbors are really great.

      3. That’s really good. We live in boonie-ish area, a few miles out of Woodstock NY, and we get along with everybody but are not close buddies with most of them. People do help shovel snow now and again, that sort of thing, and nobody ever runs out of medical marijuana, interestingly enough–not my thing, but some family members need it.

      4. We definitely couldn’t get marijuana from our neighbors but the nice old couple behind us gives our kids birthday cards. They would lend us TP in a heartbeat but they’re high risk so we only text and wave across the fence lately.

      5. That’s sweet of them. It’s good they could at least contact you if they needed more help.
