Music Questions

Septicemia did this list and it was so fun to read I decided to do it myself. I added a couple of minor questions but otherwise I took it straight from her post. It’s a great list of questions for music lovers and deserves to be passed around.

What are your favorite music genres? Goth, obviously. Also punk, post-punk, metal, ’90s alternative, dark ambient, trip hop. This might be a surprise, but I also really love classic soul and Motown.

Are there any genres you don’t like? I can’t think of any genre I totally hate, but I generally dislike ’70s soft rock and I get annoyed by anything with too much autotune.

Who was the last artist you saw live? The last famous band I saw was Mumford and Sons about 10 years ago. I love live music, but loud noise gives Mr. Robot migraines and concerts can get pretty expensive. I hate to spend so much money on something just for me. I watch lots of random local musicians play at summer festivals but I don’t really count that as going to a show.  When the kids are old enough to attend shows I might start spending money on real shows again. Of course, they’ll probably want to waste money on someone awful like Post Malone . . . I’d rather die painfully than see Post Malone live.

What artist have you seen the most live? I’m not sure. Primus, maybe?  Or Social Distortion? I think I’ve seen both bands two or three times. Punk and ska are really popular around here.

Name one artist you’ve never seen live but would really love to. If I have to be realistic, it would be cool if Sisters of Mercy came to town. If I don’t have to be realistic, I’d love to go back in time and see The Doors or Joy Division.

Have you ever been to a music festival? I’ve never been to a multi-day music festival but I’ve been to several all day multiple stage events. One of our local stations has put on some really good all day events over the years.

What is the last CD you bought? The last physical CD I bought was probably holiday music for car trips. The last digital album I bought was probably Songs Over Ruins by Desiderii Marginis. That or Dead Can Dance’s latest album, Dionysus. I try to make a point of supporting artists by spending money on art I really enjoy, but streaming for free is such a tempting way to save money. I feel kind of guilty about that.

Do you listen to music on Spotify? Nope. I have the app on my phone but I’ve only used it once or twice.

Do you listen to music on Pandora? Nope. I don’t think I’ve ever used Pandora.

Have you ever bought music off iTunes? Yes. Right after college I had an eMac computer and an iTunes account. These days I get everything from Amazon, Bandcamp, or Google.

Do you have a favorite music video? I grew up watching Mtv but I rarely watch videos anymore, so all the favorites I can think of are really old. I mostly remember the funny ones, like Jane’s Addiction’s Been Caught Stealing or Blind Melon’s No Rain. I always liked the aesthetic of NIN’s videos, though.

Have you ever bought a t-shirt at a concert? Is there a concert t-shirt you didn’t buy and regretted? I’ve only bought one, at a Jethro Tull concert. The shirt wasn’t that great but I traveled so far for the concert I felt like I needed a souvenir. Back in 1999 I dragged a friend out to see Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, my childhood musical heroes, and I should have bought a t-shirt from that one instead.

How many songs do you have on your cell phone? 53, and several are clearly songs my kids downloaded. I have some self-created playlists but they’re not downloaded for offline use.

Have you ever been part of a mosh pit? Yes, a few times. Once I got an earring ripped out (not straight through my earlobe but there was blood) and after that the mosh pit lost its magic for me.

Have you ever crowd surfed? No. It looks so cool but I’m really ticklish so I’m not sure I’d actually enjoy it.

Do you pay attention to any music charts? Not even a little bit. I listen to the radio when I drive but other than that I have no idea what’s popular. I pay a lot of attention to what friends (online and irl) and family are listening to. If a band is worth hearing, eventually I’ll hear about it from them.

Do you like any boy bands? When I was 11 or 12 I liked New Kids on the Block. Then I became a teenager and turned my back on boy bands. In college I did like famous girl band the Spice Girls.

Have you ever watched American Idol? If so, do you have any favorite contestants? I never really watched American Idol. I did see Jennifer Hudson in Dream Girls, though, and she’s an amazing singer.

Do you consider rap singing? Um, maybe? A lot of rap rides the line between singing and spoken word performance. If you’re asking if rap is musical then yes, of course it is. But Being a good rapper and being a good singer are really different skills, so I wouldn’t expect an aspiring rapper to learn it at opera school or anything.

Have you ever disliked an artist after seeing them live? No. Once I saw Cake at a festival and the lead singer walked offstage after the first couple of songs because a fan threw a shoe at his head. I was annoyed with Cake but I didn’t like their music any less.

Do you own any vinyl records? Not anymore. Back in college I had an old stereo with a turntable but when it died I didn’t have much money to replace it with. I couldn’t afford anything with a turntable. Since I didn’t have a record player I eventually gave away all my vinyl.

Have you ever shopped at a record store? I feel like this question really means “how old are you?” because yes, of course I’ve shopped at record stores. That’s where the music used to live. The first one I remember clearly is Tower Records in Tokyo, where I bought my first my first Nine Inch Nails CD (Pretty Hate Machine). I also belonged to the Columbia House record club for a while back in the ’90’s. It was pretty scammy but I got my first Alice in Chains CD from them, so totally worth it.

Where do you usually buy your music? Usually Amazon or Bandcamp

Have you ever read a book written by a musician? Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl by Carrie Brownstein. One of my friends is a part-time musician and it really spoke to her so she wanted me to read it. I was equal parts inspired and frustrated.

From 1 to 10, rate your singing ability. I’m probably a 6 or 7. Not professional level at all, but good for an amateur.

Do you like karaoke? Not really. I don’t mind listening to it but karaoke and drinking usually go hand in hand, and my voice often gives out when I’m drinking. So I guess I’m saying I’d rather drink than sing. Sounds about right.

Can you play any instruments? Nope. I took piano lessons as a kid but I can’t really play.

Have you ever written a song? No. Poetry but no songs.

Name one musician you wish was still alive. Just one? Ian Curtis probably. Maybe Chris Cornell. Marvin Gaye.

Will you listen to a song if it has screaming in it? Yes. Most of my favorite genres involve screaming or growling.

Do you read any music magazines? No. I always felt like reading music magazines would make me cooler so I used to read Spin and Rolling Stone sometimes, but the habit never stuck.  There’s always some novel or quirky history I’d rather be reading.

Do you watch any music award ceremonies on TV? Only if someone else wants to watch.

Do you have any posters or pictures of musical artists on your bedroom wall? I’ve never really done this. I’ve always been more into creative album art than pictures of the artists themselves.

Name a song that makes you cry? How Soon is Now by the Smiths. It really speaks to the awkward teen in me.

Name a song that makes you want to be a better person. I honestly can’t think of anything here. I find music in general uplifting and comforting but I can’t think of any one song that has made me a better person. I guess punk rock has made me braver about being authentic and not caring about what people think.

Have you ever gotten the lyrics to a song wrong? Yes. I love singing along to songs, and before the internet sometimes I’d sing lyrics wrong for years without even knowing it.

How many songs do you have on your computer? I don’t think I have any actually downloaded onto my computer. Now that streaming and YouTubing music is so easy I don’t need to anymore. I still have that old eMac, though, and it has two or three hundred songs on it.

Do you own any movie soundtracks? I own the soundtrack to The Commitments and the Blues Brothers soundtrack. I have a weakness for comedies featuring classic soul music.

Do you own any albums from a musical? Does the Blues Brothers count as a musical? I mean, it’s definitely a musical but not a stage production. The only other musical I like is Fiddler on the Roof and I don’t own the album of that.

Have you ever been on-air on a radio station? Never

Have you ever won a radio contest? Yes, sort of. It was sort of an impromptu contest by a local morning show. They were fundraising for a charity bike ride, and since I donated the most that morning I won a free home cooked dinner. Morning show host Bill Allred came to our house and cooked us curry. He was a really friendly guy and we had a lot of fun. We have his picture on the wall in our hallway:

Do you have any guilty pleasure artists? I listen to goofy artists sometimes like Weird Al Yankovic and Jonathan Coulton. I pretend I hate all the music my kids like but really I only hate about half of it. I think Shakira’s music is damned catchy. I genuinely love LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem. I don’t feel guilty about any of this, though. I’m too old to worry about being cool or losing goth points anymore.

Have you ever gotten a song you dislike stuck in your head? Every time I hear Swing Life Away  by Rise Against I find myself humming it hours later even though I hate it.

Do you listen to any religious music? Not really. I grew up surrounded by it and even then I never had any interest. Even at the Christmas season I usually play nonreligious classics. Around the holidays I don’t mind if other people play it, though.

Have you ever been part of a choir? I was in my high school choir and I’ve sung in church choirs before. I’m an alto.

One response to “Music Questions”

  1. I love reading all your answers! No rain took me down a 90’s indie/alt rock path on youtube with bands like Curve, Strangelove, Salad and Hole. Also a little jealous that you’ve seen Social Distortion live, I was obsessed with their album White Light White Heat White Trash as a teen.
